In Honor of Labor Day, a Look at Our Changing Workforce

According to a recent Mashable article, “5 Ways the Workforce Will Change in 5 Years,” not only will the majority of today’s employees be faced with a set of circumstances totally inconceivable to those who in 1886 advocated for the creation of Labor Day as a national holiday, but it’s likely things will also look quite different to the rest of us who currently experience an already rapidly changing workplace.

From the article: “A sizable shift is coming as millennials take their seats at businesses large and small, and Baby Boomers simultaneously either retire or modify their work styles to reflect increasingly flexible and mobile opportunities.”

The article’s author identifies the following five trends as those that will define where and the ways in which people will work five years from now:

1) A major increase in the percentage of freelance contributors.

2) Flexible schedules and telecommuting become the new normal.

3) Even fewer instances of employees working long-term for a single employer.

4) Small and medium-sized businesses will become even more reliant on fresh talent.

5) More opportunities for “Gen Xers.”

Not only does the article elaborate on these five trends, it also provides strategies for employers to implement when making long-term business plans.

I encourage you to read the Mashable piece in its entirety, and then return here with your comments.

As always, thanks for reading.
