Get Inspired! The Best Social Media Sites for Small Business Owners

James Dunn, Product Marketing Manager

In a world of information overload, it’s sometimes difficult to stay focused. Distractions are everywhere, but the reality is we need them. Let the useless information slip through your information filter and look for things that inspire you to do something new, modify something current, or reinvest in something old.

If you don’t already have a personal Twitter account, get one and follow local business, technology, and not-for-profit leaders. Twitter has made it easier than ever to connect with people you would otherwise never know or get a chance to speak with. Follow people that make you think, make you laugh, and of course, follow your competition.

Your biggest influences and inspirations will likely come from outside your industry. As Thomas Edison said, “Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.”

Some of my favorite go-to resources for inspiration and ideas include TED and Kickstarter. I also like Wieden Kennedy. They’re more than just an ad agency. Check out their incubator. I hit Mashable for news, Hipmunk for travel, TechRadar for technology, and TUAW for all things Apple.

What are some of your favorite sites?

    Great post James,

I like TED as well and Mashable is really awesome too, myself I like to use Google alerts to stay focused on a particular topic. However it isn’t fail safe, I find many blogs these days are incorporating a ‘related post’ plugin or worse anchor text:) sending me to yet another interesting post.

    Lol. Thanks again James

    Thanks Neil!
Google alerts are invaluable, and you’re right, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of interesting and related content. To really spice things up with Google alerts, use their translator to develop alerts in other languages and pick up on related content from other parts of the world. Thanks again for your comments Neil!

    Cheers,
    James
