Equality in the Workplace: How Xerox is Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the ADA with Innovative Solutions for People of All Abilities

A few short weeks ago we celebrated the 4th of July, our Independence Day here in the U.S.

This Sunday, July 26th 2015, we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the world’s first comprehensive declaration of equality and independence for those with disabilities, the Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A)

The 25th  Anniversary of the ADA is a time to reflect on the overwhelmingly positive impact this this law has made on the lives of people with disabilities, and on our country.

In its powerful Preamble, the Congressional intent clearly states that the law is intended “to assure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities.”

Visually Impaired Persons StatisticsFrom large corporations to single storefronts, businesses of all sizes and in all industries have made monumental changes to ensure that  differently abled employees feel independent, empowered and confident alongside their peers. Recent technological developments have taken those initiatives a step further, enabling greater freedom, efficiency and equality in the workplace for people of all abilities.

Printing, faxing and copying are common office tasks that many take for granted. These seemingly simple tasks can be challenging for those with disabilities. Asking for help and relying on peers for assistance on tasks like these can leave differently abled people feeling like a burden or frustrated at work.

Making work better for everyone is what we’re focused on at Xerox.  Our researchers and engineers solve challenges like these uniquely, by first examining how people get work done, and then applying the right technology for the job. Our recently announced Xerox Adaptable Accessibility Solution follows that model perfectly. Developed after gathering insights from government and non-profit agencies, this solution makes common office tasks equally easy for people of all abilities.

An Android ™ tablet is at the heart of the Accessibility Solution, mounted on the side of your Xerox printer or multifunction device. The entire unit tilts, making it easily accessible for use when in a wheelchair. It is also audible to assist those who are blind or visually impaired. By simply touching the tablet panel any user can program their document  to copy, scan, or print with a robust list of options.

Innovative thinking helps make the workplace better for everyone, regardless of their unique abilities.  Learn more about putting the Xerox Adaptable Accessibility Solution to work in your office today by visiting the Xerox Offering Customization site.
